Earn Extra Money from Your Used Motorhome

Would you like to earn an extra income from your motorhome or used campervan?

We are asked many times during the course of a year, 'do we hire out our motorhomes'?
Sorry, we do not.
But there is nothing to stop our customers from doing so and earning an extra income through it.
Have you considered hiring your vehicle out to other users who would like to try out the joys of a motorhome holiday.
Renting out your used motorhome home when not using it yourself can bring in a nice income. This can cover your own motorhome costs and also make a profit.
There would be a number of points to consider first:
Marketing your service, through word of mouth, leaflet or advert. Insuring the motorhome for this type of use. Breakdown cover for those unforeseen events. A security deposit. Also a few clauses and penalties for any internal damage, failure to empty out the toilet, or additional cleaning etc.
Alternatively if you do not want to get involved with arranging this, there are companies available on the web who will look after all these items for you, including the handover of the motorhome to the hirer, returning to you an agreed sum when your vehicle is out for hire.

Why not give it some thought. It might be a nice little earner?

Buying A Used Motorhome

There are five main styles and body types of motorhome available when making the decision to purchase a used motorhome
  1. Elevating or rising roof - often a small panel van camper with push up to erect roof that will provide more headroom once stationary on site.
  2. High Top - panel van conversions with high roofs for extra headroom and a upper bed  and storage lockers.
  3. Low Profile - coachbuilt body based motorhome on a chassis cab, with a low-line GRP moulding over the cab, which usually contains  more storage lockers.
  4. Overcab - coachbuilt style motorhome with a large GRP pod over the cab often containing a double bed.
  5. A-Class - coachbuilt motorhome based on a chassis cab with a fully-integrated body. The cab will usually have a drop down double bed from the ceiling

Buying A Used Motorhome

We are often asked by first time buyers 'which is the best used motorhome to buy, is it VW, Peugeot, Fiat or Ford'?
The answer to the question is the one that suits your personal requirements the best. The make of base vehicle is not that important, motorhomes are all based on commercial vehicles and all do the job of  moving your motorhome along the road extremely well.
Firstly find the right layout that suits you. Is a bigger kitchen area important, spacious lounge area, fixed or single beds?
Consider writing a priority list with the things you can't do without at the top and other items you are willing to compromise on at the bottom.
No motorhome will have everything you require and of course to throw into the equation when choosing a used motorhome is also the condition, especially on used motorhomes such as we supply in the 10-15 year old age range.
So layout and condition go hand in hand, but if anything if pushed when buying a older used motorhome, I would rather compromise on my layout priorities and keep condition at the top of my list.

Preparing Your Motorhome For Winter

As the season now draws to a close and the days get shorter and nights colder. It is important to think about preparing your used campervan and motorhome for the winter months ahead.
Damage through frost and snow can be swift and very costly to an unprepared vehicle.

When not using your vehicle:
  • Firstly drain all water from the habitation side (living area) of your motorhome. This will freeze, expand and split damaging water pipes, tanks, taps, water heater and toilet components. In fact remove all liquids from the motorhome including bottles and soft drinks cans.
  • Leave all taps and shower controls in the open position once drained, this will allow any trapped water a route out and will not freeze, splitting the taps or pipes.
  • Clean out the fridge and leave the door slightly ajar, allowing air to circulate inside it and reduce the cause of mold and mildew.
  • Charge the leisure battery regularly. This will prolong it's life expectancy.
  • Charge the vehicle battery. Alarm and immobiliser systems drain the vehicle battery down after a period of time.
  • If you are using your used motorhome through the colder winter months, change your gas bottle and regulator to Propane, as Propane has a lower freezing point and is easier to use and light at these lower temperatures which winter can throw at us.
Also remember when returning from a weekend away using your motorhome, drain down and do not wait for the following day. It may be too late!

The UK'S Largest Motorhome Show

The largest motorhome and caravan show comes to the NEC Birmingham  16-21 October.
Here will be displayed the new 2013 motorhome models from all the UK and European leading manufacturers.
There will be hundreds of models on display where you can compare all the available layouts.

You may not have the odd £50,000 or £60,000 spare to spend on a new motorhome, but it is always a good place to view and test internal layouts before choosing you own used motorhome of a lower price range.

Used Motorhomes Spring Checks

Now that the motorhome season is almost upon us in 2012, Motorhome Sales would like to remind you of the  routine checks you need to make on your used motorhome.  Most of our motorhomes would have been stored for the winter and being sugject to freezing temperatures, wind, rain and snow, which are not a good combination for your vehicle that is not being regularly used.

It is a good idea to get your used motorhome checked by a professional to make sure you are not left stranded or without important facilities.  If you give us a call at motorhome sales we will gladly take a look at your useu

 The Motorhome check consists of:
  • Tyre pressure checks
  • Oil level check
  • Gas Connections:  All of your appliances will have their gas supplied checked and any rubber hoses and connectors will be checked for any damage.  Rubber pipes are prone to perish over time, especially through the winter months.
  • Water Systems: All water systems should be drained and refilled and checked for any leaks.
  • Leisure Battery: A full test should be carried out to make sure the battery sufficiently holds a charge and powers the equipment in your used motorhome.
  • Engine Battery: As with the leisure battery this should be checked thoroughly and also checked to see if it starts the engine ok.  The engine should be started at least every two weeks when the motorhome is not being used.

Goggle Maps shows off it's live data feature

You may be a seasoned traveller in your used motorhomes and no all routes like the back of your hand, however the route you know very well may still not be the best route to take.  Google maps will give you several route options that feature live traffic information allowing you to choose an alternative route with less traffic.

You can now check for congestion or traffic problems before setting off on your journey. Although, as you are aware, in most cases traffic problems occur throughout the day so what may have been clear as you planned your route could now be congested due to accidents or sheer amount of traffic to one particular location.  This is overcome by using Google maps on your smart phone on route, therefore any pending problems on the roads can now be avoided.

Google maps also contains backdated data on traffic patterns, showing previous traffic spots and predictions of traffic on certain times i.e. rush hour traffic, holiday traffic etc.  This is a perfect addition for when planning a route at certain times, i.e. you want travel home on Sunday evening a certain road but find that it is heavily congested at that time based on collected data.

You can become the most savvy navigator in your used motorhome and reach your destinations without encountering any traffic.

Now is the best time to buy a sell or buy used motorhomes

With recent results from the National Caravan Council announcing that sales of new motorhomes are down on previous years, this proves that more of the motorhome market is turning to used motorhomes.

A used motorhome has many benefits but the main one is the fact that they are much cheaper than buying a new model.

When purchasing a new motorhome, any extra such as air con or uprated interiors tend to add 1000's of pounds to price and as soon as you sign for the car and drive it off the forecourt you have already lost 1000's in the value.

Our used motorhomes often come with many extras and each being completely individual from the next.  Why not leave your details with us at Motorhome Sales with your requirements and we will inform you as soon as any motorhome that fits your needs becomes available.

How does the hosepipe ban effect your used motorhome?

With the imminent banning of hosepipes across the country, confusion has arose as to whether a hosepipe can be used to fill the used motorhomes water tanks or look to facing the announced £1000 fine.

Due to the lack of rain in England during the winter months has left many of our reservoirs running worryingly low.  Now, with only a few days to go before the bans are imposed, many motorhome enthusiasts remain confused of what the restrictions cover.

The rules are confusing but here we attempt to explain what the restrictions are.  An official spokesman explained that the hosepipe ban will be in place for filling tanks on motorhomes but not for domestic things like cooking, washing and toilets.  So the law states that any water used in motorhomes must be for domestic purposes only or you will be liable  for a £1000 fine.

It is important to mention that these rules could change at any time before the restrictions are put in place. so it is best to consult your local authority for a clear explanation of their current rules.
